All activities are aligned with your curriculum. To further support the ongoing development of educational facilities in regional Australia, AUSTAR for schools provides a $2000 grant to participating schools to spend on new resources for students.

AUSTAR for schools is excited to announce that The Weather Channel presenter Lee Brooks will be travelling to Rockhampton as part of the AUSTAR for schools Weather Month.

Lee will be hosting Weather workshops on Thursday 28th July for lucky students at Crescent Lagoon Primary School between 9.30am – 11.30am.

AUSTAR for schools is excited to announce that Nat Geo Wild’s animal expert Ben Britton will be travelling to Ballarat as part of the AUSTAR for schools Wild Animal Encounters Month.

Ben will be hosting native animal workshops on Wednesday 29th June for lucky students at Pleasant Street Primary School between 9.30am – 11.30am.

Indigenous Chef Mark Olive (NITV) travel to Dubbo, Parkes and Condobolin: May 2011

AUSTAR for schools is excited to announce that National Indigenous Television (NITV) Chef and star of Outback Cafe, Mark Olive aka “The Black Olive” will be travelling to Dubbo as part of AUSTAR for schools Indigenous Cooking Month.

Mark will be hosting traditional Australian indigenous cooking demonstrations for lucky food technology students at Delroy College on Tuesday May 3 between 11am – 1pm.

Indigenous Cooking Month: July 2010

In July AUSTAR for schools and National Indigenous Television (NITV) brought traditional Aboriginal cooking demonstrations to Food Technology students at schools in Victoria. Popular Aboriginal chef and star of Outback Cafe', Mark Olive visitied schools in Mildura and Swan Hill giving students an insight into traditional Aboriginal cooking using native Australian ingredients, promoting the importance of healthy eating and good food choices. Mark also taught students about Aboriginal culture and how traditional food and cooking is an important part of the Aboriginal culture.

Food and Nutrition Experiment Workshops: June 2010

Thanks to Jimmy’s Food Factory on BBC Knowledge, AUSTAR for Schools will be hosting nutrition and food experiment workshops for Food Technology students in 3 schools in Launceston and Hobart. Upon completion of each school visit AUSTAR for Schools will present a $2000 grant to the participating school to be used by the school towards resources for students.

Onya Bike for Kids: May 2010

During the month of May AUSTAR for Schools is the presenting partner for Onya Bike 4 Kids, a charity ride from Albury to Sydney (ridden over 10 days) to raise money for Gold Week and The Sydney Children’s Hospital. FOXSPORTS newsreader Adam Peacock will join the 6 other riders and ride during the Nowra to Sydney legs.

Marine Science Month: April 2010

In April AUSTAR for schools and Discovery Channel will be travelling to schools in Cairns and Townsville with Emmy nominated underwater cinematographer and qualified marine biologist, Richard Fitzpatrick.

Richard specialises in the study of sharks and has shot more than 50 films for clients including Discovery Channel. He is renowned for filming complex behavioural sequences – many never seen before. His current research activities include a long-term reef shark monitoring program at Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea and the satellite tagging of Tiger sharks in the Far Northern Section of the Great Barrier Reef, most recently featured in Discovery Channel’s two hour special ‘Mysteries of Shark Coast.’

Richard will be hosting marine science workshops for marine students at St Augustine’s Secondary School (Cairns), Townsville Grammar School and Townsville State high School. Students will be treated to a multimedia presentation on the sharks of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea including conservation work, reef shark research and tiger shark research. Richard will also involve students in a practical lesson on what makes a shark, feeding and reproduction and will demonstrate current tracking technologies.

Upon completion of each school visit AUSTAR for schools will present a $2000 grant to the participating school, to be used by the school towards science resources for students.

Music Month: October 2009

This month AUSTAR for schools and the Country Music Channel (CMC) will be bringing award winning singer-songwriter, Amber Lawrence to schools in Armidale, Tamworth and Gunnedah as part of the AUSTAR for schools Music Month in October.

Amber has won a host of awards including Independent Artist of the Year and Independent Album of the Year last year and has just released her highly anticipated second album "When It All Comes Down" in August 2009.

Amber will host music workshops for music students at schools in Armidale, Tamworth and Gunnedah. Students will be treated to a special acoustic performance by Amber, giving students an insight into music, performance and song writing. Amber will also discuss opportunities for students to get involved in the music and entertainment industry and encourage school students to pursue their goals.

AUSTAR for schools will present each participating school with a $2000 grant upon completion of the workshops. This grant is to be used by the school to purchase educational/music resources for students.

Sports Month: September 2009

AUSTAR for schools is all about our dedication to regional Australia. Kids are our future and AUSTAR for schools is our way of giving back to regional Australians and providing a service that children can benefit from.

This month, Rugby League legend and Fox Sports commentator, Laurie Daley will be travelling to schools in regional New South Wales as part of the AUSTAR for schools Sports Month in September. Laurie Daley along with experienced coaches from Australian Rugby League Development (ARLD) and Country Rugby League (CRL) will be visiting schools and providing professional rugby league clinics and healthy lifestyle assemblies for school students at schools in Ulladulla, Shoalhaven Heads and Oak Flats. Australian Rugby League Development and Country Rugby League are committed to delivering a variety of high quality rugby league experiences for both boys and girls at the grass roots level. The clinics teach students about a sensible approach to a healthy lifestyle, and ensure a positive rugby league experience through fun practical sessions.

AUSTAR for schools will present each partcipating school with a $2000 grant upon completion of the clinic. This grant is to be used by the school to purchase sporting resources for students.

Weather Month: August 2009

This month AUSTAR for schools and The Weather Channel will be travelling to Tasmania as part of the AUSTAR for schools Weather Month in August.

Senior Meteorologist Richard “Dick” Whitaker will be visiting schools in Launceston and Hobart to give students an insight into some of Tasmania’s highly variable weather, taking a look at some of the extreme situations that have occurred in the past. Dick’s presentation will highlight the impact severe weather can have on Tasmania and how people can prepare for severe weather conditions including what to look out for. The AUSTAR for schools Weather Month will give students the opportunity to present the weather in front of a blue screen, just like a professional weather presenter! Each student will also receive their very own weather kit jam-packed with weather activities where they will get to make their very own Barometer!

As a special bonus, The Weather Channel skydiver will also land on a target in Launceston and Hobart, a stunt which symbolises water droplets falling into dams highlighting the importance of water supplies and dam levels.

AUSTAR for schools will present each participating school with a $2000 grant and Weather Station upon completion of the workshop. This grant is to be used by the school to purchase educational resources for students.

This month AUSTAR, Football Development Australia and FOX SPORTS will be bringing world class football training clinics to children in regional Queensland and the far North Coast of New South Wales . Professional coaches from Football Development Australia will be visiting schools in the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Burleigh Heads encouraging kids to get active and involved in team sports, promoting a healthy active lifestyle and teaching them football and teamwork skills in the process.

AUSTAR for schools will present each school visited with a $2000 grant upon completion of the clinic. This grant is to be used by the school to purchase sporting resources.

Science Month: May 2009

In May Discovery Science and AUSTAR will be bringing well known Astronomer, David Reneke to schools in regional New South Wales as part of the AUSTAR for schools Science Month and to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009. As a writer and educator David has over 40 years experience in astronomy with links to some of the world’s leading astronomical institutions. 2009 marks the International Year of Astronomy and David will give students an insight into the evolution of the universe, stars, galaxies, black holes and the latest discoveries in astronomy from around the world. David’s program aligns with the current school curriculum and he will be using the most up to date visual material available from NASA and the Hubble telescope. David will also teach students how to use a telescope and what to look for in the night sky.

As a special bonus in Port Macquarie astronomer David Reneke will hold a FREE astronomy night show for the Port Macquarie Community on Tuesday 19th of May between 6:30pm and 8:30pm at Port Macquarie Panthers, Pier One function room. This special night show is a relaxed and entertaining look at the universe for the whole family with some startling facts and images. After the show families will have a chance to peer through telescopes with viewings of the moon, stars and planets, and a laser guided tour of the night sky. There’s also a chance to win a brand new telescope and every family who attends will receive an AUSTAR for schools pack including a glow in the dark hat.

News and Media Month: April 2009

This month Sky News and AUSTAR will be bringing popular Sky News presenter, Celina Edmonds to schools in regional Victoria as part of the AUSTAR for schools News and Media Month. Celina has worked in the media for 17 years and has worked at Sky News for approximately 4 years hosting Sky News First Edition with Terry Willesee. Celina began her career in regional newspapers in country New South Wales. Celina will share her background with a presentation to students about how she became a presenter for Sky News and opportunities to get involved in the television and media industry. Celina will also share some of her favourite news stories while working at Sky News. Students will also have the opportunity to compile a ‘local news’ story that showcases something of interest in their local community.

AUSTAR for schools will present each school visited with a $2000 grant upon completion of the workshop. This grant is to be used by the school for educational and media resources for the students.

The new AUSTAR for schools program offers regional schools and communities a way to engage with AUSTAR personalities in local situations.

AUSTAR for schools is all about our dedication to regional Australia. Kids are our future and AUSTAR for schools is our way of giving back to regional Australians and providing a service that children can benefit from.

This month AUSTAR and the Country Music Channel (CMC) will be bringing successful young up and coming CMC music artists, Morgan Evans and Shea Fisher to schools in South Australia.

Morgan won the 2007 National Telstra Road To Tamworth Competition and was Rock Artist of The Year (with his band SOLVER) at the 2006 MusicOz Awards. Shea is also a successful artist in her own right supporting Steve Forde and The Flange on his 2006 national tour and releasing her debut album “Everyday Girl” in July 2007 at the age of 19.

Morgan and Shea will play a special acoustic performance and give students an insight into music, performance and song writing. Students will be given the opportunity to learn a song with Morgan and Shea, which they will then perform together. Morgan and Shea will share their regional backgrounds and discuss opportunities for getting involved in the music and entertainment industry.

Performing Arts Month: August 2008

The new AUSTAR for schools program offers regional schools and communities a way to engage with AUSTAR personalities in local situations.

The AUSTAR for schools program is all about our dedication to regional Australia. Kids are our future and AUSTAR for schools is our way of giving back to regional Australians and providing a service that children can benefit from.

This month AUSTAR and Showtime will be bringing Showtime presenter, Nell Schofield to schools in Tasmania. Nell hosts Showtime’s quality independent and arthouse films. She is also guest reporter for the weekly entertainment program Showtime Movie News and presents Showcase at NIDA on Showcase. In 2005 Nell was nominated for an ASTRA award for Favourite Female Subscription Television Presenter.

Nell will give students an insight into the art of interviews, script writing techniques and presenting on camera and will involve the students in a number of different interactive activities. Students will be given the opportunity to take turns at being a presenter and producer and craft a news piece to present to camera which will be recorded and given to the school at the end of the workshop. Nell will also share her background and discuss opportunities for getting involved in the performing arts industry.

Climate & Weather Month: July 2008

The AUSTAR for schools program is all about our dedication to regional Australia. Kids are our future and AUSTAR for schools is our way of giving back to regional Australians and providing a service that children can benefit from.

This month AUSTAR and The Weather Channel will be bringing The Weather Channel’s Senior Meteorologist to schools in Dubbo, Orange and Bathurst. Richard “Dick” Whitaker will present “Australia’s Natural Disasters”, taking a look at some of the major droughts, floods, thunderstorms and tropical cyclones that have affected Australia and will highlight the impact severe weather can have on our country. His presentation will involve students in a number of different interactive weather experiments and give them the opportunity to present the weather in front of a blue screen, just like a professional weather presenter!

As a special bonus in Dubbo a Weather Channel skydiver will also land on a target on the school oval symbolising water droplets falling into dams. This activity aims to give students an insight into dam levels, water restrictions, rainfall deficiencies and rainfall outlook.

AUSTAR for schools will present each school visited with a $2000 grant upon completion of the workshop. This grant is to be used by the school for educational/environmental resources for the students.

Aboriginal chef, Mark Olive from The LifeStyle Channel will be visiting schools in Maroochydore, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast involving students in live cooking demonstrations and giving students an insight into traditional Aboriginal cooking using native Australian ingredients and promoting the importance of healthy eating and good food choices.

AUSTAR for schools will present each school visited with a $2000 grant upon completion of the workshop. This grant is to be used by the school for educational/healthy lifestyle resources for the students.
